Professor Bharat Bhushan has been invited to give a plenary talk at the World Tribology Congress, which will be held in Turin, Italy, September 10-17. Bhushan is the only senior tribologist from the U.S. invited to give a plenary talk at the 2013 Congress, which is held once every four years at a location alternating between Asia, Europe and the U.S. The title of his talk will be “Biomimetics: Bioinspired Superomniphobic, Self-cleaning/Antifouling and Low Drag Surfaces.”

This is the fourth occassion at which Bhushan, who is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and Howard D. Winbigler Professor, has been asked to deliver the plenary talk at a World Tribology Congress. He previously delivered plenary talks at congresses held in Helsinki in 1989, Budapest in 1993 and Vienna in 2001.

In addition, at the same congress Bhushan has been asked to give three keynote talks at three different program tracks. These include:

  • Ecotribology track keynote lecture, “MEMS/NEMS and BioMEMS/BioNEMS Materials and Devices and Biomimetics”
  • Viennano’ 13-Nanotechnology track keynote lecture, “Nanotribology, Nanomechanics and Materials Characterization Studies and Applications to Bio/nanotechnology and Biomimetics”
  • Biomimetics track keynote lecture, “Lotus Effect: Surfaces with Roughness-Induced Superhydrophobicity, Self-cleaning and Low Adhesion”

Bhushan, who is the director of the Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- & Nanotechnology and Biomimetic, will also chair two sessions at the congress.
