Benish and Pietrykowski Receive DOE-NEUP Fellowships

Posted:

Two nuclear engineering graduate students have accepted U.S. Department of Energy-Nuclear Energy University Programs (DOE-NEUP) Fellowships that will provide $50,000 annually over the next three years for their continued research and study.

Rachel Benish is a nuclear engineering student in the Risk and Reliability Laboratory. Her research focuses on human reliability modeling and advanced cognitive human reliability analysis methods applied in nuclear power plant control rooms. Michael Pietrykowski is a nuclear engineering PhD candidate in the Risk and Reliability Laboratory. His research is centered around distributed digital instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants. Both students are advised by Professor Carol Smidts.

The graduate fellowships will also include $5,000 towards a summer internship at a National Laboratory to support U.S. students’ involvement in the DOE’s applied research programs. Through the Integrated University Program, the DOE awards both undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships to students in nuclear energy-related engineering and science programs at universities across the country.

The complete list of schools with the number of 2012 DOE-NEUP fellowships awarded can be found on the NEUP web site.
