Student Organizations and Project Teams

Aerial Robotics Team

The Aerial Robotics Team designs and builds a vehicle to compete in the international aerial robotics competition. The goal of the team is to meet the different criteria in annual competition with an autonomous and flying vehicle.

American Nuclear Society

The American Nuclear Society is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the diverse fields of nuclear science and technology.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a not-for-profit professional organization promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences. ASME develops codes and standards that enhance public safety, and provides lifelong learning and technical exchange opportunities benefiting the global engineering and technology community. ASME has more than 127,000 members worldwide.

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

The OSU chapter of AIAA encourages student research, promotes engineering diversity, and works to increase communication and collaboration between students, faculty, industry, and other student organizations.

Buckeye Space Launch Initiative

Buckeye Space Launch Initiative (BSLI) is an interdisciplinary organization of 80+ ambitious students with a shared vision of student-led spaceflight. Our mission is to establish Ohio State as a leading university in rocketry by creating economical access to space through collaborative, student-driven research. This year we have two competition teams attending the Spaceport America Cup in June 2017. Also, we have research teams studying a broad range of topics that include propulsion systems, avionics, aerodynamics, control systems, structures, and manufacturing techniques.

Buckeye Vertical

Buckeye Vertical is a student organization at Ohio State focused on exploring Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Our goal is to give students the opportunity to understand this field through professional development opportunities and project-based competitions that will support and create a platform for academic enrichment and excellence. Students will have the opportunity to explore unmanned aircraft technology, air vehicle design, and fabrication as well as develop hands-on skills and familiarization with electric-powered remote-control vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and UAM technology. Additionally, students can attend The Buckeye Vertical Lecture Series to further explore AAM, UAM, and UAS in a variety of aspects and the future of this rapidly growing sector within Aerospace.

MEGA

MEGA is a student organization for graduate students in the Department of  Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Their mission is to advise, assist, support, and socially involve graduate students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University. By serving as a reliable resource for information, providing a voice for the graduate population, acting as a liaison between graduate students and the MAE faculty and administration, and fostering a sense of community through social activities, we strive to enhance the experience of all mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering graduate students.

NASA Aeronautics Student Competitions

Organized annually by the NASA Aeronautics Research Directorate, the NASA Aeronautics Student Competitions are aimed at fostering new generations of highly-skilled scientists and engineers in the aeronautics community.

Pi Tau Sigma (OSU Pi Mu Chapter): Mechanical Engineering Honorary Society

Pi Tau Sigma (OSU Pi Mu Chapter) is a national honorary mechanical engineering fraternity and is the only mechanical engineering honorary at Ohio State. Membership is limited to the top 1/4 of juniors and 1/3 of seniors. The fraternity is co-educational as it admits both women and men.

Sigma Gamma Tau

Sigma Gamma Tau is the honor society for Aerospace Engineering. It seeks to identify and recognize achievement and excellence in the Aerospace field. Sigma Gamma Tau's collegiate chapters elect annually to membership those students, alumni, and professionals who, by conscientious attention to their studies or professional duties, uphold this high standard for the betterment of their profession.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

SAE is dedicated to advancing mobility through the research, development, design, and manufacture of several different kinds of land and air vehicles. Vehicles include a formula style racecar, super-efficient sedan, solar powered car, and electric powered car. Teams compete in regional and national competitions.

SAE Aero Design Competition

SAE's Aero Design Competition challenges students to design and construct a small radio-controlled aircraft capable of lifting many times its weight. With a fixed wing size, the design goal is to lift off from a given runway length carrying the maximum weight, and land safely.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a professional organization that promotes the development of women in the fields of science and engineering at the collegiate and professional levels. Some benefits include networking with company reps, discounted or free events, leadership retreats, social events, helping out the community, and meeting new people!
