About

Prof. Junmin Wang received the B.E. degree (with honors) in Automotive Engineering and his first M.S. degree in Power Machinery and Engineering from the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China in 1997 and 2000, respectively.  He received his second and third M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007.

Dr. Wang has 5-years of full-time industrial research experience (May 2003 - August 2008) at Southwest Research Institute (San Antonio, Texas) where he was a Senior Research Engineer and led research projects sponsored by more than 50 industrial companies and governmental agencies worldwide.  In September 2008, Dr. Wang joined Ohio State University and founded the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory (VSCL) whose major research interests include control, modeling, estimation, optimization, and diagnosis of dynamical systems, specifically for automotive engine, powertrain, aftertreatment, hybrid, flexible fuel, renewable energy, (electric) ground vehicle, transportation, sustainable mobility, energy storage, and mechatronic systems.  More than 20 researchers from all over the world conduct various research activities at VSCL.  Dr. Wang has been a sole PI on many research projects funded by federal agencies and industrial companies including National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Department of Energy, General Motors, Ford, Honda, Tenneco, Eaton, and others with total funding over $4.5M.  Dr. Wang is the author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, 2 book chapters, and holds 11 U.S. patents.

Dr. Wang serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, IFAC Control Engineering Practice, ASME Transactions Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, and SAE International Journal of Engines.  Dr. Wang serves or has served as Chair (2014 - 2016) of the ASME Automotive and Transportation Systems Technical Committee, Chair (2010 - 2012) of the SAE International Control and Calibration Committee, member (as the Liaison for IEEE Control Systems Society) of the IEEE Transportation Electrification (Electric Vehicle) Steering Committee (since 2012), and Vice Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Mechatronic Systems.

Prof. Wang is a recipient of National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2012, SAE International Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 2012, Ohio State University Lumley Research Award in 2012, the 2009 SAE International Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award in 2011, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (ONR-YIP) Award in 2009, and ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award in 2009.
