Two Ohio State students, Bryce Ford and Andres Lu, will be attending the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) SciTech Forum 2023 for receiving the Guidance, Navigation and Control Undergraduate Conference Experience Award.

Both students are receiving the GNC UCE award regarding their research in the Laboratory for Autonomy in Data-Driven and Complex Systems. This award is exclusive – only eight undergraduate students are selected each year by the GNC Technical Committee.

Bryce Ford

Ford, an undergraduate student in mechanical engineering and student researcher at LADDCS, has been selected for his second Undergraduate Conference Experience by the GNC Technical Committee. For his selection, Ford will receive a $600 travel grant for SciTech Forum 2023 and complimentary registration.

In addition to receiving an award, Ford is the lead author of a paper being presented at the forum. His paper “Path Planning for a Dubins Agent with Resource Constraints and Dynamic Obstacles” focuses on using Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) to learn the dynamics of icing conditions in the atmosphere using data from the Aviation Weather Service.

"This reward to me is an affirmation that I am on the right track in my research journey,” Ford, a two-time recipient, said.

Andres Lu

Lu, an undergraduate student in aerospace engineering and student research assistant at LADDCS, has been selected for the Undergraduate Conference Experience by the GNC Technical Committee. For his selection, Lu will receive a $600 travel grant for SciTech Forum 2023 and complementary registration.

“Receiving the GNC UCE award feels like a vote of confidence in my potential to contribute to the future of aerospace,” Lu said. “I look forward to connecting with and learning from experts in the field.”

Throughout the conference the UCE cohort will attend many scheduled meetings with leaders of aerospace engineering from academia and industry to receive mentorship.

LADDCS is directed by Dr. Mrinal Kumar, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Ohio State.

Both Ford and Lu have said the mentorship by Dr. Kumar and the guidance and support he provides is something they accredit to their achievements.

The winner of the paper competition will be announced and presentations will be given at the AIAA SciTech Forum 2023 will be held on Jan. 23-27, 2023, in National Harbor, Md, or online, as the 2023 Forum is a hybrid event.
