Graduate programs rank among nation’s best

The Ohio State University College of Engineering’s graduate program is again ranked first in Ohio and 16th among all public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 Best Graduate Schools issue published on March 29, 2022.

Several departments within the college also placed among the top programs in the nation. The Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering again ranked 10th among its peers within American universities. Nine other engineering specialties at Ohio State also ranked in the top 30: materials (14); nuclear (14); industrial/manufacturing (16); aeronautical/astronautical (22); computer (23); electrical (25); mechanical (26); chemical (27); and civil (30).

For the U.S. News rankings of graduate programs, 214 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees were surveyed. Ohio State Engineering is ranked 30th overall.

“As Ohio’s flagship engineering program, and one of the best in the Midwest, we are committed to preparing the next generation of exceptional talent that our country needs,” said College of Engineering Dean Ayanna Howard. “Moreover, we are focused on building a diverse, inclusive environment and encouraging all of our students to embrace the social impact they can have as engineers.”

Total graduate enrollment at the Columbus campus increased by almost 2% to 1,884 students for the 2021-22 academic year. The increase in female graduate student enrollment outpaced male enrollment 6.2% to 0.1%. Total minority undergraduate and graduate enrollment also increased.

While overall engineering graduate school rankings are derived from a combination of 10 quantitative and qualitative indicators, the publication’s engineering specialty rankings are based solely on peer assessments by department heads in each area. Assessment surveys and statistical data were collected in fall 2021 and early 2022.

Every four years, computer science program rankings are included in U.S. News & World Report’sBest Science Schools rankings. In this year’s list, Ohio State ranked 19th in the computer science systems category and 24th in the artificial intelligence category.
