Pranav Sriganesh, PhD candidate and student of Professor Ahmet Selamet competed at the 2021 SAE Noise and Vibration Conference and Exhibition, Student Paper Competition. His paper and presentation earned him the first place spot out of 15 competitors at the event in Grand Rapids, MI.

“The ported shroud casing treatment for turbocharger compressors offers numerous performance advantages,” said Sriganesh. “However, the design inherently generates tonal noise at high frequencies in the order of 10 kHz. In-duct acoustic measurements become sensitive to the angular location of the pressure transducers mounted on the duct wall due to multi-dimensional wave propagation at such high frequencies.”

Sriganesh’s paper, titled “Circumferential Variation of Noise at the Blade-Pass Frequency in a Turbocharger Compressor with Ported Shroud” describes a unique rotating compressor inlet duct setup capable of quantifying the variation of noise measured around the duct. The experiments reveal that the circumferential variation in measured noise can be as high as 20 dB, which may cause erroneous design comparisons when typical measurement techniques are employed. The work also provides an insight into the error that may be expected with conventional fixed acoustic measurements.
