Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Emeritus, Raj Singh, was the President of the INTER-NOISE 2021 Congress. The 2021 congress was the 50th edition of the INTER-NOISE Congress. The event was held virtually, between August 1-5, 2021, and featured presentations of over 600 papers, 55 posters and 25 e-booths.

“Since this was the 50th INTER-NOISE, it was my honor to organize it,” Singh said. Singh was also the President of the 2002 INTER-NOISE Congress.

Along with being an Emeritus Professor, Singh is the director of the Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is also the founder and program director for the Research Internship for Young Academics (RIYA) Program, which is designed to facilitate cutting-edge research experiences for undergraduate mechanical engineering students from top institutes in India. Singh is well-respected internationally for his research, teaching and consulting work in machinery vibration, acoustics, nonlinear dynamics and digital signal processing, with applications to vehicles and geared systems.

The 2021 INTER-NOISE Congress was put on by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the USA, and ProAcustica (Brazil) on behalf of the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering. Singh said the event created numerous interactions and networking opportunities, and drew in more than 1,000 attendees from across 46 countries.

The theme of the 2021 INTER-NOISE Congress was “The Next 50 Years of Noise Control.” Singh said the idea of the theme was to be forward-looking while celebrating the accomplishments of last 50 years.

“We essentially focused on 7 plenary or keynote lectures that were consistent with the theme,” Singh said. “These covered a wide range of contemporary topics from aircraft and airport noise, machine learning methods, environmental or community noise issues, noise control materials, and acoustic oceanography.”

The INTER-NOISE Congress is a highly impactful group within the field of noise control. The first INTER-NOISE led to the passing of the 1972 U.S. Noise Control Act. The group has generated a significant body of literature, around 20,000 paper. INTER-NOISE has led to quieter products and vehicles, as well as reductions in noise and vibrations in communities via improved highway barriers, roads and buildings.

The 51st INTER-NOISE Congress will be held in August 2022, in Glasgow, UK.
