Alumnus and board member receives Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Distinguished Service Award

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering External Advisory Board Member and three-time alumnus Steven Arndt, PhD, PE was awarded the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Distinguished Service Award in 2017.

Arndt, a long-time member of the NRC staff and External Advisory Board member, also serves as the Chairman of the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers.         

The annual award, the NRC’s highest granted to an individual employee, recognizes recipients for distinguished service and excellent achievements.

According to the citation, Arndt was heralded for his exemplary career and diverse contributions to nuclear safety around the world. He has led the development of new methods and programs for assessing safety in a wide range of technical areas, while advancing the capabilities of the NRC and other regulatory agencies.

“It was a great honor to receive the NRC Distinguished Service Award,” said Arndt. “My early work in nuclear safety during my graduate studies at Ohio State laid the foundation for my career. I am very proud to work with such outstanding engineers at the NRC and I’m grateful that I have had the opportunity to make contributions that have had such far-reaching impact.”

The award was presented at the NRC’s 38th Annual Awards Ceremony on September 7, 2017 in Rockville, Maryland.

Arndt is a three-time alumnus, earning his BS in Engineering Physics, and MS and PhD from Ohio State’s Nuclear Engineering Program. He received the College of Engineering’s 2004 Distinguished Alumnus award, among his many honors.
