The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was named Outstanding Student Organization.
The awards celebrate students’ commitment to improving communities on campus and around the world, and promoting the visibility and reputation of the engineering profession.

In addition to enriching students’ academic experience, student organizations provide opportunities for Buckeye engineers to hone their skills and solve real-world challenges.

“The young women and men involved in these organizations accomplish astounding feats in service to their profession and humanity,” said David Tomasko, associate dean of undergraduate education and student services. “We are not only proud them, but thankful for their new perspectives and ideas.”

The highest honor, Outstanding Student Organization and an accompanying $1,000 donation, went to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) for their depth of involvement, breadth of impact, large number of active members and diversity of activity.

SHPE also received the Diversity and Inclusion Enhancement Award for developing and implementing activities that support an inclusive mindset and culture.

Four other organizations were honored for their contributions to the engineering community with awards for service, industry partnerships and outreach. Each awardee received a $250 donation to support future activities.

The Outstanding Community or University Service Award was presented to Design for 90 for their work in partnering with multiple non-profit organizations to engineer solutions for underserved populations in Columbus.

The K-12 Outreach Award went to the Society of Women Engineers whose members impacted hundreds of students through a biweekly outreach program at a local middle school and a partnership with the Girl Scouts of Ohio to teach girls about green construction.

The Media Darling Award was presented to ACM-W, the Association of Computing Machinery Women’s Chapter, for the commitment to and success in sharing their passion for computer science and engineering externally via social media and the traditional media.

Alan Ritter, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, received the 2018 Outstanding Advisor Award for his efforts to guide the launch of the new but rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence Club.
