As one of the leading organizations for nuclear engineering professionals, the American Nuclear Society (ANS) advances and promotes research and scholarship within the nuclear community.

The department's nuclear engineering program, led by Professor Carol Smidts, created the ANS Ohio State Student Chapter more than 50 years ago to stimulate interest in nuclear science and technology on Ohio State’s campus.

The honor society inductees were joined by Assistant Professor of Practice Vaibhav Sinha (center), who serves as the faculty advisor for the student chapter, and Professor Vish Subramaniam (far right), chair of MAE.

This year, four outstanding ANS Student Chapter members were inducted into the ANS Alpha Nu Sigma National Honor Society. Graduate students Claudia Picoco, Boyuan Li and Yuzhou Wang and recent MAE graduate Ryan Gallagher (’17 MS, Nuclear Engineering) were offered membership into the highly selective honorary on June 6.

Professor Vish Subramaniam, department chair, presented Picoco, Li and Wang with their certificates during the Nuclear Engineering External Advisory Board Meeting on Oct. 13. Gallagher, who is currently conducting post-graduate research at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was unable to attend the ceremony.

“This prestigious membership is a lifetime honor, and it is highly selective,” said Assistant Professor of Practice Vaibhav Sinha, who serves as the faculty advisor for the student chapter. “The newly inducted members represent the outstanding students from the nuclear engineering program at The Ohio State University.”

Established in 1979, the Alpha Nu Sigma Honor Society was created to recognize exceptional scholarship, integrity and achievement among nuclear engineering students at institutions across the nation.

For Picoco, this new membership offers her the opportunity to connect with others in the field that she loves.

“Being recognized by the ANS Alpha Nu Sigma National Honor Society is a great honor, because it acknowledges our work and efforts in this field,” said Picoco, the student organization’s president. “The ANS Student Section is working toward educating OSU students interested in nuclear energy and involving nuclear engineering students to strengthen our nuclear community here at OSU.”

The ANS Ohio State Student Chapter aims to provide students with a valuable network of expert faculty, fellow students and passionate professional engineers. From networking events to tours of the Nuclear Reactor Lab, the university’s ANS chapter opens students’ eyes to the broad appeal of the nuclear sciences and engineering field.

Over the past year, the student organization has more than doubled in size thanks to targeted recruitment efforts. By connecting with undergraduate students from all branches of engineering, the team has raised awareness about the nuclear engineering undergraduate minor, the graduate program and the role that ANS plays in students’ success.

On Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m., the student group will host a screening of the film Pandora’s Promise, in collaboration with the Michigan–Ohio ANS Local Section and the Columbus Power and Energy Society. In addition to a brief introduction by retired MAE Professor Richard Denning and Suzanne Jaworowski, of the Department of Energy, the event will include poster presentations by students in the nuclear engineering program.
