In the 13 years since it was first published, the Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology has become a leading reference in the nanoscience field.

This month, the fourth edition of the handbook was published. Edited by Howard D. Winbigler Professor Bharat Bhushan, an Ohio Eminent Scholar, this new edition was written by a team of more than 140 international experts in the field.

As shared by Springer, the latest edition of this handbook was compiled by Bhushan to provide a broad understanding of the nanotechnology field. Almost every chapter is either new or substantially revised or expanded.

“There is an increasing need for a multidisciplinary, system-oriented approach to the design and manufacturing of micro/nanodevices which function reliably.  This can only be achieved through the cross-fertilization of ideas from different disciplines and the systematic flow of information and people among research groups,” said Bhushan, who directs Ohio State’s Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio and Nanotechnology and Biomimetics. “There continue to be significant developments in bio- and nanotechnology, and many products have been commercialized. Now, politicians, investors and industrialists can see a return on their R&D investments. Societal, ethical and political effects, as well as environmental and health and safety issues, need to be addressed.”

The fourth-edition Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology integrates nanofabrication, nanomaterials, nanodevices, nanomechanics, nanotribology, materials science and reliability engineering. The comprehensive publication provides readers with a deeper understanding of the rapidly evolving field of key technology.

As an internationally recognized leader in the bio/nanotribology and bio/nanomechanics fields, Bhushan was the ideal editor for this handbook. He also serves as the co-editor of the Springer NanoScience and Technology series.
