Papageorge Awarded Prestigious Presidential Fellowship

Michael Papageorge, graduate student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), received a 2015 Presidential Fellowship awarded by The Ohio State University Graduate School.  The Presidential Fellowship is the most prestigious award given by the Graduate School, and recognizes the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research or terminal degree project.

Papageorge received his BS degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University.  His research focuses on the development of advanced laser diagnostic systems for combustion and turbulence and the application of these systems to study turbulent flows.  His work began with the construction of a one-of-a-kind laser system which allows flow measurements to be collected with high resolution in both space and time. Using this system, Papageorge has taken measurements in a wide range of both reacting and non-reacting environments which have elucidated new insights to related physical mechanisms.

Papageorge is advised by Associate Professor Jeffrey Sutton, PhD. “Turbulent flows are very difficult to study and, in particular, to understand fundamental “cause and effect” relationships,” Sutton said.  “Mike’s research using quantitative, time-resolved, multi-parameter laser measurements has the potential to yield new information directly linking flow turbulence and turbulent mixing behavior and is at the leading edge of the field.  I am quite pleased he was recognized with this award.”

Papageorge says he is deeply honored to have been selected by the Graduate School for the Presidential Fellowship. “I am very grateful to all those who helped me get here,” he stated. “Receiving this award has further deepened my resolve to strive for excellence in the final chapter of my graduate work.”

“We congratulate Mike for his research accomplishments and for this significant recognition,” said Ahmet Selamet, MAE Department Chair.

About the Presidential Fellowship

The Graduate School awards about 15 Presidential Fellowships each semester for outstanding academic achievement. The fellowship provides financial support so that each Presidential Fellow may devote one year of full-time study to the completion of his or her dissertation or degree project unimpeded by other duties.  Competitions are held autumn and spring semesters.
