West Presented College of Engineering Staff Award
The award is one of the college’s “Above and Beyond Awards,” recognizing outstanding performance in support of the college’s mission and university core values as they go above and beyond in carrying out their job responsibilities. The Exemplary Service to Students Award provides recognition to staff members for superior service to students at departments, centers or college.
Described in his nomination as a “passionate teacher whose enthusiasm rubs off on every student he works with,” West joined MAE in 1990 in the electronics laboratory. He was on the team that won the 2013 Ralph L. Boyer for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Engineering Innovation Award and won the Pi Tau Sigma Above and Beyond Award in 2012. Pi Tau Sigma is an International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society.
West’s nomination is deserving according to Associate Professor and ASME Fellow Blaine Lilly. “West’s positive spirit brings out a can-do attitude in students,” Lilly said. “Students often surprise themselves with what they are able to accomplish after working with Joe.”
“Every day I am amazed by the ingenuity and determination of our students to solve problems,” West commented. “Being part of a team who affects their future is a tremendous honor.”

The ESAC is a staff-led organization. Its mission is to “identify, address and advocate for staff interests, needs and concerns through direct, cooperative and bi-directional engagement with the Dean, Executive Committee and other university organizations; strengthen the connection between the staff and the core mission and strategic plan of the college; and promote and support transparency in college operations.”
