In his research project, titled "Leveraging Shear Layer Instabilities for Asymmetric Control of Supersonic Jets," Gonzalez will be studying technologies that could lead to performance enhancements in next-generation aerospace vehicles. An example of one such enhancement might be tailoring the directionality of an aircraft's noise signature upon take-off or landing to reduce the perceived noise levels on the ground in neighborhoods surrounding crowded airports. Together with a larger team of researchers, Gonzalez will utilize massively parallel computing systems operated by the Department of Defense to conduct high-fidelity, three-dimensional, time-accurate computational fluid dynamics simulations of the flow control phenomena.

About SMART Scholarships
The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program was established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program primarily targets "hand-on-the-bench" researchers and engineers and aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. Upon graduation, SMART award recipients are placed in civilian jobs in DoD laboratories and agencies. The award is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education.
