Sahin and Gaitonde Receive AFRL/DAGSI Ohio Student-Faculty Research Fellowship

Aerospace engineering graduate student Majid Sahin and Dr. Datta Gaitonde have been awarded an Air Force Research Laboratory/Dayton Area Graduate Studies Institute (AFRL/DAGSI) Ohio Student-Faculty Research Fellowship.  Their research, titled "Effectiveness of Plasma and Mechanical Actuators in Airfoil Stall Control," falls in the Air Vehicles category of funded projects for 2012. Both Sahin and Dr. Gaitonde will receive one-year stipends for their research, which are renewable pending reapplication and approval by AFRL/DAGSI.

Majid Sahin and his faculty advisor Dr. Gaitonde will study stall control through high-fidelity simulations which will compare the effectiveness of two types of actuators: the first, a plasma-based device based on Nano-Second Pulse Dielectric Barrier Discharge (NSDBD); and the second, a more traditional actuator based on synthetic jets. Stall controls are critically important in aircraft designed for commercial and military fixed wing and rotary vehicle missions. In recent years, the problem of stall has also become increasingly important in the design of highly efficient wind turbines to harness renewable energy sources. Dr. Gaitonde is the John Glenn Chair for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

More about AFRL/DAGSI
The AFRL/DAGSI Ohio Student-Faculty Research Fellowship program, funded through DAGSI by the Ohio Board of Regents, supports graduate science and engineering students and faculty who conduct research in areas targeted by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The key objectives of the program are to strengthen AFRL research ties to Ohio's academic science and engineering community, stimulate effective collaboration between Ohio universities and the AFRL, leverage Ohio research funding through use of AFRL resources and to develop research talent to fulfill future AFRL and Ohio's Third Frontier workforce needs.
