Professor Marcelo Dapino Wins Anderson Award

Posted:

Mechanical engineering Professor Marcelo Dapino recently won the 2007 Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award, presented by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee. This new award is given to a junior researcher whose work has made a notable impact in the field of smart materials, and it includes a certificate and a cash prize that will be presented at this year's SPIE International Symposium on Smart Structures and Materials, in San Diego, California.

As the Director of the Smart Materials and Structures Laboratory at OSU, Professor Dapino's research focuses on fundamental and applied studies of nonlinear dynamic systems based on active materials. He has made substantial contributions to this field through his work on experimental characterization and thermodynamics-based constitutive modeling of magnetic and phase change active materials.

Professor Dapino is also a principal investigator on several research programs sponsored by industry and government agencies, including those funded by DARPA, NSF, ONR, Dana Corp., and Moog, Inc. He also serves as a core investigator on major collaborative activities, including an Office of Naval Research Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) on iron-based magnetostrictive alloys, and an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Initiative on smart vehicle concepts.

The author of more than 70 technical publications, as well as the recipient of several “Best Paper” awards by ASME and the International Society for Optical Engineers (SPIE), Professor Dapino is a recognized leader in the field of active material systems. He currently serves as Chair of the Behavior and Mechanics of Multifunctional and Composite Materials Conference of the SPIE International Symposium on Smart Structures and Materials; he has also served as General Chair of the Adaptive Materials and Systems Symposium of the ASME IMECE International Congress & Exposition, and he has been elected as Secretary to the ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee.

The Mechanical Engineering Department congratulates Professor Marcelo Dapino for his outstanding research and contributions to the field of Adaptive Structures and Material Systems, and for winning the 2007 ASME Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award.
