Mechanical engineering graduate students Michael Groeber and Himanshu Bhatnagar won first and third-place prizes in this year's Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.

Advised by Professor Somnath Ghosh, Michael Groeber won the first-place award in the competition. Groeber is a graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering, and his research focuses on the incorporation of realistic microstructure representations into computational models. His award-winning paper and presentation were titled, "Realistic Microstructure Representation in Computational Models Based on True 3-D Characterization of Reconstructed Serial Sections."

Himanshu Bhatnagar, a doctoral student who is also advised by Professors Somnath Ghosh and Mark Walter, received the third-place award in the Hayes competition for his paper titled, "Computational Modeling of Competing Failure Mechanisms in EB-PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings." Bhatnagar's doctoral research aims at developing a comprehensive computational model to predict the catastrophic failures of coatings that protect critical aircraft engine components from severe thermal loading.

Hayes award winners are chosen by a committee of distinguished faculty members from The Ohio State University. They are honored for a superior level of graduate student scholarship, and their award-winning papers are included in the Hayes Forum Proceedings.

The Mechanical Engineering Department congratulates Michael Groeber and Himanshu Bhatnagar for their academic excellence, and for their outstanding performance in this year’s Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.
