Faculty Appointed Associate Editors

Carol Smidts, professor in nuclear engineering, will serve as the associate editor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Reliability. The journal is one of the top two journals in reliability engineering.

Marcelo Dapino, associate professor in mechanical engineering, has also been appointed to serve as the associate editor for the Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control.

Smidts is a 1991 graduate of Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), with a doctorate in engineering physics. She has received several honors including the NASA Flight Safety Award and the Stellar Team Award from the Rotary National Awards for Space Achievements. Her research focuses on probabilistic risk assessment, dynamic methodologies, continuous event trees, Markov analysis, software reliability modeling, automated software testing & safety, human reliability modeling and digital systems reliability.

Dapino is also director of the Smart Materials and Structures Laboratory at Ohio State, established to investigate novel materials and systems employing fundamental principles, and to advance the education of the next generation of engineers. He received the Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award in 2007 from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee, recognizing his work in the field of smart materials.

Dapino's research involves fundamental and applied studies of non-linear dynamic systems based on active materials and he has made substantial contributions to this field through his work on experimental characterization and constitutive modeling of magnetic and phase change active materials.

Congratulations to both faculty members on their accomplishments!
