David Nosse, a master's degree candidate in the Mechanical Engineering Department at The Ohio State University, placed third in the engineering subdivision of the 2005 Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum with his paper titled, "Compact Actuation through Magnetorheological Flow Control and Rectification of Magnetostrictive Vibrations."

Advised by ME professor Marcelo Dapino, David Nosse's research focuses on smart materials. His award-winning paper presents a new class of actuators capable of large linear displacement and large forces through implementation of two smart materials-Terfenol-D and magnetorheological fluid. The paper includes details of the actuator's component design, experimental objectives, testing results, and systems level modeling.

The Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum recognizes outstanding graduate student scholarship within The Ohio State University. As a top three finisher at the Forum, Nosse will receive a cash prize and his paper will be included in the Hayes Forum Proceedings.

The Mechanical Engineering Department congratulates David Nosse for his academic excellence, his outstanding research, and his third place finish at the 2005 Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.
