The Board of Governors of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has elected Professor Amos Gilat, a 31-year member of the faculty to ASME Fellow status. His ASME Fellow certificate was presented to him by Professor Ahmet Selamet, chair of the department, on July 24, 2013.

The citation for Gilat's ASME Fellow designation notes, "Amos Gilat is an internationally recognized pioneer in the development of novel experimental methodologies in mechanics with focus on plasticity. He is a leader in the area of experimental dynamics and its applications for investigating material behavior at high strain rates and/or elevated temperatures. His texts on numerical methods are among the most popular for undergraduate teaching, and he is an excellent instructor and mentor to students. Gilat has served ASME by organizing symposia for several congresses, and presenting invited papers. The experimental techniques developed by him and his research results are recognized by aerospace and automotive researchers."

The textbooks authored or co-authored by Gilat include: MATLAB: An Introduction with Applications, now in its fourth edition from John Wiley and Sons, Inc., and Numerical Methods for Engineers and Scientists: An Introduction with Applications, now in its second edition (third edition to be published soon by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.). He has also edited a book for the ASME Applied Mechanics Division titled, Mechanical Testing of Ceramics and Ceramic Composites, in 1994.

In addition to his ASME membership, Gilat is a member of the Society for Experimental Mechanics and the Society of Sigma Xi at Brown University, where he earned his PhD in Engineering. In 2012, he received an Honorary Doctor Degree from Tampere University of Technology, in Tampere, Finland.
