Liette and Ricciardi Receive Leo Beranek Student Medals for Excellence in the Study of Noise Control

The 2013 Leo Beranek Medal for Excellence in the Study of Noise Control has been awarded by the International Noise Control Engineers (INCE) to Ohio State mechanical engineering students Jared Liette, in the graduate student category, and Eric Ricciardi, in the undergraduate student category.  Liette is advised by Professor Raj Singh and Ricciardi is co-advised by Professor Singh and Dr. Jason Dreyer.

The Leo Beranek Student Medal was established by the Board of Directors of INCE/USA to recognize excellence in the study of noise control by undergraduate and graduate students at selected academic institutions in North America. Dr. Leo Beranek is a renowned acoustical scientist and one of the founders of BBN Technologies (inventor of the internet). He received the National Medal of Science in 2002. 

When speaking in the past about the awards, Beranek has commented, “Student contributions to the betterment of techniques for the control of noise in buildings, vehicles and outdoors, and of means for reducing noise produced by any loud source is readily sought and will now be recognized by this Student Medal. I am proud to be named for this important student award.” 

About the Award

The Leo Beranek Student Medal for Excellence in the Study of Noise Control is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who have completed at least one college level course in engineering acoustics, noise control, or closely related field and shall have graduated or be expected to graduate with an engineering or closely related degree during the current or immediately prior year of the award.  In addition to the Medal itself Jared and Eric will receive a copy of the book “Sound Ideas: Acoustical Consulting at BBN and Acentech.”
