College of Engineering Faculty Awards Announced

Several members of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering have been named recipients of 2013 College of Engineering Faculty Awards. Department Chair Ahmet Selamet indicated how pleased he was with the number of individuals recognized from the mechanical and  aerospace engineering programs, “I am elated to learn that so many of our highly qualified faculty have been selected to receive these prestigious awards. I know I join my colleagues in congratulating them and thanking them for their contributions to higher education in terms of exceptional teaching and scholarly research here at Ohio State."

The following individuals will be presented their respective awards at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet, scheduled for April 24 at the Blackwell Ballroom. Those receiving awards include:

Assistant Clinical Professor Lisa Abrams 
The Charles E. MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching
The Charles E. MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching is named for the late Dean of the College of Engineering. The award is presented annually to faculty members who have demonstrated, in a superior manner, their interest in and willingness to help students, their interest in improvement of the high reputation of the College of Engineering, and their outstanding teaching ability.

Lecturer Satya Seetharaman
The Charles E. MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching
The Charles E. MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching is named for the late Dean of the College of Engineering. The award is presented annually to faculty members who have demonstrated, in a superior manner, their interest in and willingness to help students, their interest in improvement of the high reputation of the College of Engineering, and their outstanding teaching ability.

Assistant Professor Robert Siston
The David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award
The David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award was established in 2007 in honor of David McCarthy, retired senior director of development in the College of Engineering. The McCarthy Award recognizes the contributions of College of Engineering junior faculty and staff to create more innovative and effective teaching and learning.

Professor Joseph Heremans
The Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award
The College of Engineering recognizes the interdisciplinary research contributions of faculty and research staff by awarding the Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award. Funds for award are made possible by an endowment established by John H. and Mildred C. Lumley. The award is presented to a team of faculty and/or research scientists who have demonstrated significant research collaboration that cuts across departmental or discipline boundaries. Professor Joseph Heremans and Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Roberto Myers are the co-recipients of the 2013 award.

The Lumley Research Award
The College of Engineering recognizes the research contributions and productivity over the past five years (2008-2012) of faculty and research scientists by presenting the Lumley Research Award at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet. Funds for these awards are made possible by an endowment established by John H. and Mildred C. Lumley. 

Nordolt Professor Mohammad Samimy

The Clara M. and Peter L. Scott Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education.
The award was established in 1987 by Clara M. and Peter L. Scott (BS Electrical Engineering 1949, Honorary Doctor 1995). The award is made to a senior professor in engineering or architecture in the College of Engineering who has distinguished himself or herself nationally or internationally. The award is based on excellence in teaching and the qualitative aspects of teaching with emphasis on effective innovation, and for outstanding fundamental or applied research contributions (in scope and/or originality) in one or more areas of endeavor. The award is presented only once in a faculty member's career.

The Ralph L. Boyer Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Engineering Innovation
The award was established in 1988 by Ralph L. Boyer, a 1924 Ohio State graduate in mechanical engineering. The award notification received by each of  the team members noted that they were selected for their significant contributions to student-centered learning, teamwork and the use of real-world problems in educating engineers of the future.
