Graduate Research Fellowships Awarded To Schloemer and Pinti

Posted:

Marie Pinti, a current ME graduate student, and Sarah Schloemer, who will enter the ME graduate engineering program this fall, have been notified that they have each been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship.

Pinti is advised by Assistant Professor Shaurya Prakash. Her research is largely conducted in Prakash's Microsystems and Nanosystems Laboratory and focuses on novel nanofluidic platforms for low cost, energy-efficient water purification. Schloemer will be advised by Assistant Professor Ajit Mohan Chaudhari of the College of Medicine, who also has an appointment within The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Her research will involve simulating hypertrophy, atrophy, and fatigue to better understand how these factors affect knee kinematics and how certain muscle activation strategies may help prevent ACL injury.

The NSF's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity.  The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions.  The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified students and strongly encourages under-represented populations, including women, under-represented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, to apply for this fellowship.
