Asim Iqbal Awarded Presidential Fellowship

Asim Iqbal, a PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded a Presidential Fellowship, the most competitive and prestigious scholarly recognition provided by the Graduate School of The Ohio State University.

As a member of Professor Ahmet Selamet’s Engine Research operation at the Center for Automotive Research, Iqbal studies advanced combustion technologies in spark ignition (SI) engines. His research, which has been supported by Chrysler Group LLC, focuses on establishing a better understanding of the underlying physics governing the phenomenon of knock (or autoignition) and developing novel knock prediction techniques. Knock has been a persistent obstacle limiting the fuel economy of the gasoline-fueled, SI engine since the engine was first invented by Nicolaus Otto in 1865. Iqbal’s investigation of knock involves extensive chemical kinetic modeling of the autoignition of gasoline and its oxygenated blends along with engine experiments and engine simulations. In light of the fact that 97.7% of the 14,157,100 engines produced in North America in 2010 were SI engines, remedying the constraints imposed by knock is critical for developing fuel efficient engines. This fundamental research is expected to have a far-reaching impact on engine design in terms of reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Presidential Fellowship, which is a twelve consecutive month award, recognizes outstanding scholarship and research ability, plus provides recipients with the opportunity to devote full time to their dissertation research. Based on the timing of his award, Iqbal has elected to begin his fellowship Winter Quarter 2012.

Congratulations to Asim Iqbal!
