The Ohio State University College of Engineering has appointed two faculty members from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to named professorships. Dr. Mohammad Samimy has been named the John B. Nordholt Endowed Professor and Dr. Ahmet Kahraman has been appointed as a Howard D. Winbigler designated professor. Both appointments will be effective July 1, 2011.

“I am delighted that two of our faculty members have been recognized by the College of Engineering as deserving of these honors. Their contributions to the department, college and university have helped us to earn an outstanding reputation for research, teaching and scholarship,” said K. “Cheena” Srinivasan, Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Earlier this year, Dr. Mohammad Samimy was presented the University Distinguished Scholar Award, which recognizes and honors faculty members who demonstrate scholarly activity, research, or other creative works that represent exceptional achievements in their fields. A member of the department since 1985, Dr. Samimy is a Fellow of the American Institute Of Aeronautics And Astronautics, the American Physical Society, the American Association For Advancement Science, and the American Society Of Mechanical Engineers. Dr. Samimy is also the Director of Ohio State’s Aeronautical and Astronautical Research Lab. His research has focused on fundamental physical understanding of fluid flows in engineering applications using experimental and analytical tools. He has made significant contributions in several areas including compressible turbulence, flow/acoustic control, and laser based flow diagnostics. Dr. Samimy received a master’s degree and PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Samimy had been a Howard D. Winbigler Professor within the College of Engineering.

Dr. Ahmet Kahraman has been a member of the department since 2003 and is a Fellow of the American Society Of Mechanical Engineers. In 2009, Dr. Kahraman received The Ohio State University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Nominations for the Distinguished Teaching award are submitted by current and former students and colleagues and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students and faculty. Dr. Kahraman is also the Director of Gleason Gear and Power Transmission Research Laboratory at Ohio State as well as the Director of the Pratt & Whitney Center of Excellence in Gearbox Technology. He has published nearly 70 journal papers and 30 refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Kahraman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey and his doctorate from Ohio State. Prior to joining Ohio State, he was an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toledo.
