Yentsch Earns SMART Scholarship

Posted:

Robert Yentsch, a mechanical engineering PhD candidate, has been awarded a Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship. Yentsch, whose research focuses on computational modeling of hypersonic flight phenomena, expects to be funded for two years, to the completion of his PhD in 2013.  SMART fellowships typically provide a generous annual stipend, full tuition and fees, health insurance funding, and book allowances. Following graduation, SMART award recipients are placed in civilian jobs in Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories and agencies. The post-degree service commitment is commensurate with the length of the scholarship award. Faculty advisor to Yentsch is Dr. Datta Gaitonde.

The SMART Scholarship program, which is part of the National  Defense Education Program, is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the Naval Postgraduate School, was created as part of a concentrated effort to improve the flow of new, highly skilled technical labor into DoD facilities and agencies and to enhance the technical skills of the workforce already in place.
