C.H. Menq, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Menq was recognized by the AAAS and SME for his contributions in the field of mechanical engineering, specifically for his work on coordinate metrology, ultra-precision motion control, and instrumentation for imaging and manipulation of microstructures.

Menq is the supervisor of the Precision Measurement and Control Laboratory where he has advised more than 70 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. He has performed foundational research in coordinate metrology, precision engineering, and machinery vibrations, and has helped educate the next generation of leading manufacturing researchers. In addition, results of his research on CAD-based part localization and automated collision-free inspection path generation have had important applications in a wide spectrum of manufacturing problems with a major impact on coordinate metrology and precision manufacturing. Menq’s work has garnered support from numerous sources including the National Science Foundation, the US Air Force GUIDE Consortium, and NASA, among others.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) promote the advancement of manufacturing knowledge and is the world’s leading professional society. The SME College of Fellows honors those members who have made outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the profession. It is a highly prestigious honor that can only be earned through 20 years or more of dedication and service.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association. In addition to organizing membership activities, AAAS publishes the journal Science, as well as many scientific newsletters, books and reports, and spearheads programs that raise the bar of understanding for science worldwide. AAAS elects members whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.
