Sadeghipour Receives Prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Posted:

Widely considered the most prestigious award in the U.S. conferred upon undergraduates studying the sciences, The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship has been awarded to mechanical engineering undergraduate Ehsan Sadeghipour.

Out of the 321 scholarships awarded nationwide, 52 were awarded to engineering majors. Many of the scholars have dual majors in a variety of mathematics, science, engineering, and computer disciplines; at Ohio State, Sadeghipour will also earn a minor in economics.

Sadeghipour is designing a new type of MR (magneto-rheological) damper and using his design to build a more efficient transmission in a biped robot. He is currently studying under Jim Schmiedeler, assistant professor in mechanical engineering and hopes to begin implementing his work in the Locomotion and Biomechanics Lab with, ERNIE, the planar biped robot. Sadeghipour began his research under Eric Westervelt, former mechanical engineering assistant professor at Ohio State.

Along with his national recognition in scholarship, Sadeghipour will be awarded up to $15,000 for tuition, fees, books and room and board over the course of the next two years.

Ohio State may only nominate four students (one in each category) for the Goldwater Scholarship each year. This is the first year that all four students at Ohio State have been awarded the Scholarship. The other student awardees are Craig Buckley in chemical engineering, Douglas Schaefer in physics and math and Christine Zgrabik in engineering physics.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by the United States Congress in 1986 in honor of former US Senator and 1964 Republican Presidential Candidate Barry Goldwater.
