Professor Bharat Bhushan Receives Alexander von Humboldt Award

Posted:

Mechanical engineering Professor Bharat Bhushan has been honored with his second Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for outstanding scholarship in tribology and mechanics on the macro-to-nanoscales.

Humboldt Research Award candidates are nominated by distinguished scholars at research institutions in Germany. Recipients must have contributed fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights that have a significant impact on their own research area, and that also extend beyond their specialized field. Humboldt Research Awards are presented annually to 100 internationally renowned scientists and scholars from abroad, and recipients are given a cash prize, as well as an invitation to conduct an original research project with a colleague in Germany.

Professor Bhushan's research focuses on scanning probe microscopy for nanotribology and nanomechanics as applied to surface and mechanical characterization, contact modeling, adhesion, friction, wear, and lubrication. His discoveries related to the superhydrophobicity of lotus leaves have been featured in the New York Times, and his groundbreaking research on magnetic tape edge damage and degradation mechanisms of tape lubricants has been presented in the scholarly journal, Tribology Letters.

The recipient of numerous national and international awards, Professor Bhushan is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and the Howard D. Winbigler Professor in Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University. He is also a Fellow of ASME, IEEE, STLE, and the New York Academy of Sciences.

The Mechanical Engineering Department congratulates Professor Bhushan for his internationally acclaimed research and scholarship, and for being a recipient of the 2007 Alexander von Humboldt Research Award.
