Electric Machines and Drive Systems for Electrified Vehicle Systems

All dates for this event occur in the past.

This is a virtual seminar being held via Zoom

Speaker: Dr. Julia Zhang, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The Ohio State University (OSU)

Abstract: This talk will introduce ac electric machines and drive systems, and their advanced application examples in electrified vehicles including road vehicles and aircraft.  We will discuss the strong need of multi-disciplinary research between electrical, mechanical, and material engineers to meet the system requirements of electric machines for these new applications such as high mechanical speed operation (10000 rpm to 30000 rpm), high specific power of machines >14 kW/kg including the cooling hardware, high efficiency >95%, high operating temperature >200°C for some applications.

Bio: Dr. Julia Zhang is an Associate Professor with Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The Ohio State University (OSU).  She was an assistant professor at OSU from 2017 to 2021, at Oregon State University from 2012 to 2017.  From 2010 to 2012, she was a control engineer at Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, MI, leading the control algorithms development for electric machines and power converters for 2013 Ford hybrid electric vehicle products.  She graduated from The Ohio State University in 2010 with her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.  She works on design, modeling and control of electric machines and drive systems and their industry applications.
