4:15 P.M. THE SAE CHAPTER WILL PROVIDE FREE PIZZA AND DRINKS

Abstract

The goal of this topic is to provide future engineers with an overview of vehicle system on-board diagnostics (OBD), what it is and what is required. This presentation will provide an overview of why diagnostics are so important around the world, along with which countries require OBD regulations. The presentation will also discuss what failure levels are important, how often do diagnostics run in a vehicle, and what are the important elements that make up a diagnostic. Two real examples of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles diagnostics will be presented, breaking down each one in to the elements that allow it to run in a vehicle and successfully make decisions. The talk will finish up with answering what is the future of OBD, for engineers looking for a career.

About the speaker

Jim received his master’s of science in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University. While at WVU, Jim was a co-captain of the SAE Formula team and vice president of the WVU chapter of SAE. Jim’s research work was on heavy duty diesel engine emissions and development of a chassis dynamometer based heavy duty class 8 emissions test. After graduating college, Jim started working for DaimlerChysler and was lead emissions calibrator for the 3.7L V6 and 4.0L I6 engine families. Jim then transferred to on-board diagnostics calibration where he was responsible for all aftertreament system calibrations and later became the Center of Excellence leader for Aftertreament Systems Diagnostics.  After Fiat and Chrysler merged, Jim was a feature team leader on the Fiat 500 Federalization project that launched the Fiat 500 in the USA.

Jim moved on to become the leader of the Advanced OBD Systems team where he has built a team comprised of outstanding engineers from around the globe. Jim leads this dedicated team which is focused on Advanced OBD solutions for all of FCA US LLC’s future product portfolio.
