Abstract:

NASA develops technologies for the air transportation system which is a $1.5 trillion economic activity in the United States.  The research conducted by NASA’s aeronautics programs directly benefits today’s air transportation system, aviation industry, and the passengers and businesses who rely on aviation every day.  This talk is going to give an overview of the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) strategic vision and its current technical challenges.  This talk will also present some of the turbomachinery research being done at Glenn Research Center (GRC) under the Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project.  Finally, the front block of an aggressive compressor was recently tested in the W7 multistage test facility to understand the flow physics of the design.  Results of the test and status of the analysis will be presented.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Mark Celestina is an aerospace engineer in the Turbomachinery and Turboelectric Systems branch in the Aeropropulsion Division at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.  He received his PhD and MS from the University of Cincinnati.  He has been developing CFD codes for turbomachinery flows since he started at NASA Glenn in 1983 and is a co-founder and key member of the team that developed APNASA which is specifically designed for rotating multistage turbomachines.  Over the last four years, he has been the technical lead of an Integrated Technology Demonstrator (ITD) 30A under the Environmental Responsible Aviation (ERA) project.  The objective of this ITD is to investigate the high-pressure compressor (HPC) of a modern turbine engine and demonstrate technologies to enable reductions in specific fuel consumption.  Dr. Celestina is published in the Journal of Turbomachinery and is a regular contributor to the ASME’s International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) annual conference as a session chair and reviewer.  He can be contacted at mark.celestina@nasa.gov.
