Title:

The EcoCAR Challenge – A Vehicle for Engineering Research and Education

Abstract:

The OSU College of Engineering hosts a number of student project teams which participate in a number of national and international competitions.  From the Solar Decathalon project aimed at designing the house of tomorrow to the Buckeye Bullet Team which pushes the limits of alternative propulsion.  In this seminar, the wide impact of these projects on the participating students will be discussed for one such project, the EcoCAR Challenge.  The EcoCAR Challenge is a three-year competition in which student teams from the U.S. and Canada design, build, and compete with a redesigned vehicle.  The competition aims at improving the environmental impact of the vehicle without sacrificing the overall utility of the vehicle.  As part of this project, numerous undergraduates from all disciplines have received valuable hands-on experience, Honors students have conducted research, and graduate students have conducted applied research in the field of transportation.  As part of the seminar, the vehicle design will be presented as well as an overview of the various opportunities available to students engaged in this project.
