Abstract: The increasing demand for high-energy, affordable batteries is expected to experience significant growth in the coming decade, primarily driven by the electrification of the transportation industry. However, this surge in demand is putting strain on Li-ion battery supply chains, particularly for critical materials such as nickel, and cobalt. Concerns have arisen due to price instability, environmental toxicity, and limitations in the absolute supply of cobalt, leading to a need for alternative solutions. In addition to cobalt, the availability of Class 1 nickel, a required grade for batteries, has also been declining due to geological scarcity and low incentive prices. These challenges highlight the importance of exploring new avenues for the development of nextgeneration Li-ion battery cathode chemistry. To address these issues, this seminar will specifically focus on advancements in Li-ion battery cathode chemistry, aiming to overcome the limitations posed by cobalt and nickel supply constraints. By exploring alternative materials and innovative approaches, the seminar aims to contribute to the development of more sustainable and efficient battery technologies.

Bio: Devendrasinh Darbar is a Researcher at Global Technical Center at General Motors. His research focus on developing next generation electrode material for Li-ion battery for battery electric vehicle (BEV). Specifically, he is dedicated to developing cobalt-free cathode materials to enhance electrochemical performance and achieve target energy density for electric vehicle applications. Before joining General Motors, he worked as Battery Material Engineer at Ascend Elements. Dr. Darbar completed his Ph.D. in 2021 through a joint effort between Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Tennessee Technological University. His thesis title was “Cobalt Free Cathodes for LithiumIon & Sodium-Ion Battery Technologies and Artificial Intelligence-Based State of Charge Estimation”. Dr. Darbar completed his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Technology from India. Throughout his educational journey, Dr. Darbar gained valuable experience through internships. In 2011, he interned at Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited-India (BSNL), followed by an internship at the International Thermonuclear Emission Reactor (ITER-India) in 2012. In 2018, he served as an ASTRO intern at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
