Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering M.S. Course Requirements

The Graduate School at The Ohio State University specifies that at least 30 graduate credit hours are required for a Master's Degree.


Thesis Option

Students who wish to pursue the Thesis option must meet the following requirements in order to graduate with a Master's degree:

  • At least 3 hours of letter graded Mathematics courses 4000-level and above (except Math 4504), Statistics courses 5000-level and above, or other program approved Math Equivalency courses

  • At least 18 hours of graduate level letter graded coursework1,2

    • At least 12 hours must be AAE or program equivalent courses 5000-level and above

    • At least 6 hours must be courses 6000-level and above

  • At least 9 hours of AAE 8998 or a combination of level approved coursework and AAE 8998 (at least 6 hours of AAE 8998is required).

  • 3 hours of AAE Seminar


Non-Thesis Option

Students who wish to pursue the Non-Thesis option must meet the following requirements in order to graduate with a Master's degree:

  • At least 3 hours of letter graded Mathematics courses 4000-level and above (except Math 4504), Statistics courses 5000-level and above, or other program approved Math Equivalency courses

  • At least 24 hours of graduate level letter graded coursework1,2

    • At least 12 hours must be AAE or program equivalent courses 5000-level and above

    • At least 12 hours must be courses 6000-level and above

  • 3 hours of AAE 8998

  • 3 hours of AAE Seminar


*Note: It is suggested that these courses be CoE, Bio-MAPS, or College of Medicine courses

1 Unless used for mathematics credit, AAE courses 6000-level and above or other program equivalent courses can be used to meet both the AAE and 6000-level requirements.

2 As long as the primary requirements are met, up to 3 hours may be 4000-level non-departmental courses.
