Research Interests

Research interests include:

  • Control, modeling, estimation, and diagnosis of dynamical systems specifically engine, powertrain, aftertreatment, hybrid, flexible fuel, alternative / renewable energy, energy storage, (electric) ground vehicle, transportation, sustainable mobility, and mechatronic systems.

Biographical Narrative

Prof. Wang received the B.E. degree in Automotive Engineering and his first M.S. degree in Power Machinery and Engineering from the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1997 and 2000, respectively, his second and third M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, respectively, from The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2007.

Prof. Junmin Wang has 5-years of full-time industrial research experience (May 2003 - August 2008) at Southwest Research Institute (San Antonio, Texas) where he was a Senior Research Engineer and led research projects sponsored by many industrial companies and governmental agencies worldwide. In September 2008, Dr. Wang joined the Ohio State University and founded the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory (VSCL), whose major research interests include control, modeling, estimation, and diagnosis of dynamical systems, specifically for automotive engine, powertrain, aftertreatment, hybrid, flexible fuel, alternative / renewable energy, energy storage, (electric) ground vehicle, transportation, sustainable mobility, and mechatronic systems. More than 20 researchers from all over the world conduct various research activities at VSCL.

Prof. Wang serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IFAC Control Engineering Practice, ASME Transactions Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, and SAE International Journal of Engines. He is the author or co-author of more than 170 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and holds 11 U.S. patents. Dr. Wang is a recipient of the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 2012, National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2012, Ohio State University Lumley Research Award in 2012, SAE International Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award in 2011, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (ONR-YIP) Award in 2009, and ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award in 2009.

Since joined Ohio State University in September 2008, I have advised 11 doctoral students (graduated 3 Ph.D. students in 2010, 2011, and 2012), 4 M.S. students (graduated 1 in 2010), 2 post-doctoral researchers, 5 undergraduate researchers (including 3 senior honor students), 9 visiting scholars, and more than 30 undergraduate students (as the academic advisor). The graduated Ph.D. and M.S. students joined major universities and industrial companies. In addition, I also severed on dissertation/candidacy committees for over 20 Ph.D. students supervised by other faculty members.
