ME Seminar Requirements

Upcoming ME Seminars

All full-time Master’s and pre-Candidacy PhD Mechanical Engineering graduate students are required to register for ME 8888, the Mechanical Engineering Seminar course, and are required to attend the seminars every seminar (except summer term). PhD students who have passed the Candidacy Exam and part-time students are exempt from taking ME 8888, however it is strongly encouraged.  ME 8888 must be taken in each semester of enrollment (when offered). The objective of the ME 8888 seminars is to broaden the background and knowledge of mechanical engineering graduate students by exposing them to a wide range of contemporary research topics in the diverse field of Mechanical Engineering. In addition, students are expected to ask questions after the speaker has finished their talk. Time is set aside for the speaker to answer questions after each seminar. These individuals are experts in their field and so students should take advantage of the opportunity to ask them questions.

Course requirements for ME 8888 are as follows:

  • Students registered for ME 8888 are required to attend a minimum of six seminars per semester. Failure to attend at least six seminars in a semester will result in an “Unsatisfactory” grade. Students must register for ME 8888 or they will not earn credit for the class.

  • Students who have time conflicts with other courses are required to register for the second section of ME 8888 on Buckeye Link and are required to attend a minimum of six seminars within the University in consultation with their advisor.

  • Students are welcome to attend seminars outside of the normal ME seminar series, but must complete one ME 8888R Report form after you have attended all of the external seminars you plan to attend and your advisor must sign it before it will be accepted. In the event an advisor is unavailable, the advisor can e-mail his permission to the MAE Graduate Advising Office. Please DO NOT complete multiple ME 8888R Report forms. One form for all of the seminars you plan to attend will be sufficient.

  • Presentations attended at a conference or seminars by other students (except when presented as a regular ME 8888 seminar) will not count toward the seminar requirement.

  • Students will be required to complete an ME 8888 Report at the end of each seminar and submit the report to the designated area. ME 8888 Reports will only be available at the beginning of the seminar and must be placed in the ME 8888 Report box at the end of each seminar in order to receive credit for the seminar. The ME 8888 Report serves as an attendance checklist as well as a way to actively gauge both the speaker and topic.

  • There will be different ME 8888 report forms every week. You must submit the report form for that week in order to receive credit.

  • Students who attend seminars outside of the regularly scheduled ME seminars are required to complete and submit the ME 8888R Report form to the MAE Graduate Advising Office or to maegradprogram@osu.eduby the last day of scheduled classes before finals. Failure to submit the ME 8888R Report form by the deadline will result in an “Unsatisfactory” grade.

  • Mechanical Engineering students who are Graduate Teaching Associates (GTA’s) do not need to satisfy the ME 8888 requirement while they are serving as a GTA. In order to be exempted from ME 8888, students who are GTA’s (except ME GTA's) will need to provide a letter stating your appointment and the appointing unit to the MAE Graduate Advising Office by the first Friday of each semester.
